In some shops that offer computer repairing, you will see signs telling you that they are A+ certified. This means that the repair technician has been qualified by a national organization to perform the basic requirements of the job. The A+ certification is an older certification dating back to the mid 90's. The test is updated every few years and people wanting to be certified have to pass two tests on PC's and repair.

These tests are multiple choice exams administered by CompTIA, and require re-certification every three years to maintain the A+ certification. A+ is one of many computer certifications available from independent groups like CompTIA and ICCP. Many other certifications are given by the companies who make the products, like the Microsoft Office certification and Adobe certification. These tests require hands-on operations with software in addition to multiple choice questions.

When one friend was helping another with his Toshiba laptop computer repairs, he discovered that the hard drive was defective. He is a professional computer technician, so he did what he does at his job and wrote "FAULTY X" on its sticker to indicate that it shouldn't be used again.

Then he sent the computer, which was still under its 1-year warranty, in to Toshiba, but was dismayed by the reply he got back. Toshiba refused to replace the hard drive because "the label was written/torn" and they said they do not cover the cost for this type of damage. So they said they would do the repair, but would charge him $417.58 for it. They sent him an email saying that during the diagnostic procedure they found that the HDD was defective but the label was also written on. They considered the fact that the label was written on to be "damage" and therefore would not cover any of the repair cost.
