When experiencing a problem with your computer, an owner's instinct usually leads him to go to big repair shops.

However, there have been complaints that their problems were not really solved and their pockets have been drained of hundreds of dollars. To prevent this from happening again, here are some useful steps you may take before hitting the panic button.

1. Learn from experience, other people's experience that is.

After taking a deep breath or two, search for a website that offers do-it-yourself solutions. These sites, such as www.answers.microsoft.com contain suggestions from other computer owners sharing their experiences. Chances are, you'll find insights on how to solve a problem similar to yours.

2. Go back to the source.

Is it not logical that the people who know your computer the best would be its maker? So before you do a run around the city, visit your computer brand's website first for available support or the nearest service center of the brand of your computer first. You may even get helpful service for free.

3. Take time to read the "fine" print.

While some services seem to charge you a "fine," but some printed materials offer not just fine but great deals. There are publications which offer reasonable subscription fees yet contain very valuable information and computer care tips.

4. Survey your area.

Another option worth considering is going to your local repair shop. You never really know what tricks your local geeks can pull off if you only give them the chance. And since you are bringing business to your neighbor, these shops will tend to do the neighborly thing as well and give you the best prices.
